他可是大反派志志雄真实麾下“十本刀”里的天才少年剑客，号称“天剑”。平时总是挂着这种天真无邪、人畜无害的笑容，但其实是个信奉“弱肉强食”的狠角色。他手里那把名刀“菊一文字则宗”可是削铁如泥，速度极快。
在京都篇最后那场经典对决里，他和剑心打得那叫一个天昏地暗。最后剑心突破了身体极限，使出“天翔龙闪”，直接把宗次郎的刀给打断了，他也因此败给了剑心。战败后的宗次郎信仰崩塌，开始重新思考自己的剑道，最终踏上流浪之旅去寻找自己的答案啦。
